Certification

Transitional License

Memphis Teaching Fellows enter the classroom during their first year of teaching on a Tennessee Transitional License. Under this license, Fellows will be considered highly qualified and meet Federal No Child Left Behind standards. Fellows must be continuously enrolled in licensure coursework through the Memphis Teaching Fellows in order to be eligible for the Transitional License. Upon successful completion of the licensure coursework – which usually takes one to two years – Fellows will be eligible for a standard Tennessee Apprentice License.

Apprentice License

Fellows will pursue a standard Tennessee Apprentice License within their subject area, while teaching full-time, by successfully completing the Tennessee Practitioner Teacher Program (TNPTP – Memphis). TNPTP – Memphis is the exclusive licensure program of the Memphis Teaching Fellows (MTF) and is designed to streamline licensure of individuals with content area expertise. The specific requirements of TNPTP – Memphis include the following:

  • Successful completion of the Teaching for Results seminar
  • Passing scores on all required Praxis exams
  • 100 hours of mentoring, including professional development
  • Teach successfully for one year as teacher of record
  • Demonstrate a positive impact on student achievement
  • Successful end-of-year principal evaluation/recommendation
  • Fulfill all financial responsibilities to the MTF program

Costs

Tuition for TNPTP - Memphis is used to cover all expenses related to training and professionally developing Fellows throughout their time with the program, including the costs of all materials. Our goal is to ensure that our tuition costs are low and remain competitive among other licensure providers. Fellows will be responsible for all costs associated with licensure coursework, estimated at $5,000, paid in installments outlined by the program over the course of the first year of teaching.

Teaching for Results Seminars

Here's a quick overview of what TNPTP - Memphis means to you if you become a Fellow:

  • To be eligible to enroll in the TNPTP - Memphis, Fellows must successfully complete the Pre-Service Training Institute’s Teaching for Student Achievement Framework Sessions and Practice Teaching.
  • Fellows participate in Teaching For Results (TfR) seminars throughout their first year of teaching. TfR seminars are professional development sessions designed to help new teachers increase student achievement and close the achievement gap for poor and minority students.
  • Through the TfR seminars, Fellows will become proficient at understanding the content their students must master, delivering focused instruction, and using assessment tools to gauge student progress.
  • TfR seminars are held in small, subject-specific groups taught by current top-performing teachers. Seminars meet for 3 hours in the evening, once every other week, for a total of 16 sessions.
