Certification

Memphis Teaching Fellows will earn their Tennessee teaching certification while teaching full-time.  Fellows will pursue a standard Tennessee teaching license in math, chemistry, middle school, French, Spanish, or special education through successful completion of the Tennessee Practitioner Teacher Program*. Fellows will be responsible for all costs associated with certification coursework, estimated at under $5,000 over two years.

Here's a quick overview of what the PTP you will participate in means to you if you become a Fellow:

  • TfR is a series of professional development seminars that helps teachers become effective at understanding the content their students must master, delivering focused instruction, and using assessment tools to gauge student progress.

  • TfR Seminars develop a teacher's knowledge and ability to teach subject matter with the same focus on student achievement that was established through the Teaching for Student Achievement (TfSA) framework taught during Institute.

  • Seminars are held in small, subject-specific groups taught by current top-performing MCS teachers.

  • Seminars will meet for 3 hours, every other week, for a total of 16 sessions per year.

  • Seminars will be held in the classroom of the Seminar Leader (SL) on a set day of the week. Please note, the SL will determine the day of the week the seminar is offered.

The seminars will take the place of your enrolling in an Teacher Education Program at the University of Memphis and, upon successful completion, will certify you to teach in Tennessee.

* Pending state and district approval

Fellows will teach under a Transitional License. Under this license, candidates will be considered highly qualified and meet Federal No Child Left Behind standards. Fellows must be continuously enrolled in the PTP and remain an active participant in Memphis Teaching Fellows to be eligible for the Transitional License. Upon successful completion of the certification coursework – which usually takes one to two years – Fellows will be eligible for a standard Tennessee Apprentice teaching license.
