Securing A Position
Subject Area Eligiblity
Candidates accepted into Memphis Teaching Fellows will be assigned to teach in a specific subject area. The subject to which Fellows are assigned is based on teaching eligibility, district need, and—whenever possible—the candidate’s stated preferences.
Memphis Teaching Fellows is recruiting candidates to teach secondary math, secondary chemistry, middle school, K-12th grade Spanish and other foreign languages, and K-12th grade special education (instructional resource or severe/profound). Although no specific coursework or credit hours are typically required to be eligible to apply to teach math, chemistry, middle school, Spanish and other foreign languages, candidates interested in teaching these subjects must have strong content knowledge in order to take and pass the required Praxis II Subject Assessment. Typically, candidates interested in teaching math, chemistry, Spanish or other foreign languages will have significant relevant coursework or significant relevant professional experience.
Candidates interested in teaching special education or middle school must also be prepared to take and pass the required Praxis II Subject Assessments. In addition, relevant coursework or experience is preferred.
If invited to an interview, candidates will be provided with additional information on which subject area(s) they are eligible to teach.
District Hiring
The process of matching Fellows with specific teaching positions throughout the district’s schools is coordinated, in part, through the Teaching Fellows office. Assignments will be determined through a variety of processes- such as job fairs- as well as Fellows’ own efforts in securing a teaching position.
We consistently ask Fellows to keep in mind that the determination of specific school assignments can be a challenging process and that it is often difficult to predict exact teaching assignments until very close to the beginning of the school year due to mobility within the school district.
It is the mission of Memphis Teaching Fellows to work in schools with the highest need for teachers. As a result, all candidates should be prepared to teach wherever they are most needed. School assignments are primarily driven by school need and by each Fellow’s qualifications. Fellows are asked to be extremely flexible with regard to the job search process.
